In chapter 4, God gave specific duties regarding the most sacred items in the Tabernacle to Aaron, his sons, and the Kohathites. “When the camp moves, Aaron and his sons must enter the Tabernacle first to take down the inner curtain and cover the Ark of the Covenant with it. Then they must cover the inner curtain with fine goatskin leather, and the goatskin leather with a dark blue cloth. Finally, they must put the carrying poles of the Ark in place (Numbers 4:5-6). A similar process was repeated with the table, lampstand, altar, and all the various utensils. God further states, “When Aaron and his sons have finished covering the sanctuary and all the sacred utensils, the Kohathites will come and carry these things to the next destination. But they must not touch the sacred objects, or they will die” (Numbers 4:15). The Gershonites and the Merarites carried out each of their roles, as described in chapter 3, but with more detail.
The Levites were responsible for the Tabernacle, and in order for any member of the Levites (Kohathites, Gershonites, and Merarites) to work in the Tabernacle or in the transportation of it, you had to be between 25 and 50 years old. In the text, it states 30 to 50 years old, but that was just for taking the census and establishing a count for those who were eligible to work. Taking care of and transporting the Tabernacle, God’s house, was a huge responsibility. God considered it so important that at the end of Numbers, chapter 1, God states that anyone other than a Levite who came too close to the Tabernacle would be executed. Wow! God was like….”Don’t play with my house!”
Lord, thank you for another day of your glorious Word! Tomorrow’s Word may bring some controversy, so in preparation for tomorrow, fill our spirit this entire day with peace, love, kindness, receptiveness, and understanding. Thank you, Lord!
“May the Lord bless you and protect you. May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord show you his favor and give you his peace.” (Numbers 6:24-26)
….AND MAY WE ALL PRACTICE THIS WITH ONE ANOTHER.
