Numbers 35 - Towns for the Levites

Chapter 35 begins with the people of Israel still camped beside the Jordan on the plains of Moab where God instructs Moses how to divide land for the Levites. “Instruct the people of Israel to give to the Levites from their property certain towns to live in, along with the surrounding pasturelands. These towns will be their homes, and the surrounding lands will provide pasture for their cattle, flocks, and other livestock.” (Numbers 35:2-3) The Lord continues, “You must give the Levites six cities of refuge, where a person who has accidentally killed someone can flee for safety. In addition, give them forty-two other towns. In all, Forty-eight towns with the surrounding pastureland will be given to the Levites…The larger tribes will give more towns to the Levites, while the smaller tribes will give fewer. Each tribe will give in proportion to its inheritance.” (Numbers 35:6-8)

The rest of the chapter highlights the process for setting up the cities of refuge, and the rules and regulations concerning murder, accidental deaths, and seeking refuge.

Lord, thank you for your Word today! You have blessed each of us abundantly; we have inherited much! Help us to willingly give to those who are in need. We love you!

“May the Lord bless you and protect you. May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord show you his favor and give you his peace.” (Numbers 6:24-26)

….AND MAY WE ALL PRACTICE THIS WITH ONE ANOTHER.
