Numbers 2 - Organization for Israel’s Camp

In chapter 2, God instructed Moses to organize the different tribes in specific areas around the Tabernacle. The tribes Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun were instructed to camp on the east side of the Tabernacle. They were also responsible for leading the way whenever the Israelites traveled to a new campsite. The tribes Reuben, Simeon, and Gad were responsible for camping on the south side of the Tabernacle, and were 2nd in line when the Israelites traveled. The Levites were 3rd in line when they traveled, and they camped in the middle around the Tabernacle to protect it. The tribes Ephraim, Manasseh, and Benjamin camped on the west side of the Tabernacle, and were 4th in line when the camp traveled. The tribes Dan, Asher, and Naphtali camped on the north side of the Tabernacle, and brought up the rear when moving from campsite to campsite.

Each group had a RESPONSIBILITY, and each role was equally important for the functioning of the whole. What responsibilities do we have? In reflecting on this chapter, I found myself thinking about the roles of the members of a family...mother, father, children, etc. It helped me realize how important it is that we assign roles and responsibilities to each family member so each are accountable to the other for the benefit of the whole family. What a great lesson we pass on to our children when we raise them to be responsible to one another.

Thank you, Lord, for your Word today! May it help us draw closer to you.

“May the Lord bless you and protect you. May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord show you his favor and give you his peace.” (Numbers 6:24-26)
