Nehemiah 7

Most of this chapter is a complete recount of Ezra 2, but it begins with Nehemiah instructing his leaders on gate protocol and guarding the newly walled city. The chapter begins, “After the wall was finished and I had hung the doors in the gates, the gatekeepers, singers, and Levites were appointed. I gave the responsibility of governing Jerusalem to my brother Hanani, along with Hananiah, the commander of the fortress, for he was a faithful man who feared God more than most. I said to them, “Do not leave the gates open during the hottest part of the day. And while the gatekeepers are still on duty, have them shut and bar the doors. Appoint the residents of Jerusalem to act as guards, everyone on a regular watch. Some will serve at their regular posts and some in front of their own homes.”

Nehemiah Registers the People

At that time the city was large and spacious, but the population was small. And only a few houses were scattered throughout the city. So my God gave me the idea to call together all the leaders of the city, along with the ordinary citizens, for registration. (Yes, Nehemiah! God is ready to lead each of us, if we let Him.) I had found the genealogical record of those who had first returned to Judah. This is what was written there: (Nehemiah 7:1-5)

The rest of the chapter recounts Ezra 2, identifying all of the families that had returned from exile. So instead of rewriting this content, read it for yourself, see how it aligns with our lesson in Ezra, draw some conclusions, make some connections, and strive to deepen your knowledge.

Lord, thank you for your Word today! Help us recognize and acknowledge you as the author of many of our thoughts and ideas, understanding that it is you who is leading our accomplishments. We love you!

May the Lord bless you and protect you. May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord show you his favor and give you his peace.” (Numbers 6:24-26)

….AND MAY WE ALL PRACTICE THIS WITH ONE ANOTHER.
