Nehemiah 11 - The People Occupy Jerusalem

Now that Nehemiah and the rest of the returned exiles have rebuilt the wall of Jerusalem, and the people have recommitted themselves to serving and obeying the Lord, they are ready to populate the city. In this chapter, the leaders chose a tenth of the people in surrounding towns to live in Jerusalem along with the leaders and officials. The chapter begins, “Now the leaders of the people were living in Jerusalem, the holy city, at this time. A tenth of the people from the other towns of Judah and Benjamin were chosen by sacred lots to live there, too, while the rest stayed where they were. And the people commended everyone who volunteered to resettle in Jerusalem.

Here is a list of the names of the provincial officials who came to Jerusalem. Most of the people, priests, Levites, Temple servants, and descendants of Solomon’s servants continued to live in their own homes in the various towns of Judah, but some of the people from Judah and Benjamin resettled in Jerusalem.” (Nehemiah 11:1-4)

The rest of the chapter lists and identifies the tribes, families, priests, Levites, and gatekeepers who occupied Jerusalem, as well as the areas surrounding Jerusalem that other Israelites lived.

Lord, thank you for your Word today! Help each of our families come together for the sole purpose of serving you! We love you!

May the Lord bless you and protect you. May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord show you his favor and give you his peace.” (Numbers 6:24-26)

….AND MAY WE ALL PRACTICE THIS WITH ONE ANOTHER.
