Joshua 20 - The Cities of Refuge

In this chapter, the Lord instructs Joshua to have the people of Israel choose the cities of refuge. “The Lord said to Joshua, “Now tell the Israelites to designate the cities of refuge, as I instructed Moses. Anyone who kills another person unintentionally can run to one of these cities and be protected from the relatives of the one who was killed, for the relatives may seek to avenge the killing.” (Joshua 20:1-3)

The Lord continues explaining the process, and the chapter ends with the list of cities designated for refuge. Here are the cities: Kedesh of Galilee in Naphtali; Shechem in Ephraim; Kiriath-arba (Hebron) in Judah; on the east side of the Jordan was Bezer in Rueben; Ramoth in Gilead of Gad; and Golan in Bashan of Manasseh. “These cities were set apart for Israelites as well as the foreigners living among them. Anyone who accidentally killed another person could take refuge in one of these cities. In this way, they could escape being killed in revenge prior to standing trial before the community.” (Joshua 20:9)

Lord, thank you for your Word today! Thank you for protecting us and showing us grace and mercy. We love you!

May the Lord bless you and protect you. May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord show you his favor and give you his peace.” (Numbers 6:24-26)

….AND MAY WE ALL PRACTICE THIS WITH ONE ANOTHER.
