Joshua 18 - The allotments of the Remaining Land

In this chapter, the tribe of Benjamin receives its land. At this time, seven tribes had not been allotted their inheritance, so Joshua divided the land between them. “Joshua asked them, “How long are you going to wait before taking possession of the remaining land the Lord, the God of your ancestors, has given to you? Select three men from each tribe, and I will send them out to survey the unconquered territory. They will return to me with a written report of their proposed divisions of the inheritance. The scouts will map the land into seven sections, excluding Judah’s territory in the south and Joseph’s territory in the north. Then I will cast sacred lots in the presence of the Lord our God to decide which section will be assigned to each tribe. However, the Levites will not receive any land. Their role as priests of the Lord is their inheritance. And the tribes of Gad, Reuben, and the half-tribe of Manasseh won’t receive any more land, for they have already received their inheritance, which Moses, the servant of the Lord, gave them on the east side of the Jordan River.” (Joshua 18:3-7)

The men did as they were told. They mapped the land, listed the towns in each of the seven sections, and returned to Joshua. In the presence of the Lord Joshua cast sacred lots to determine the section each tribe received.

The tribe of Benjamin was given its allotment first. “The northern boundary began at the Jordan River, went north of the slope of Jericho, then west through the hill country and the wilderness of Beth-aven.” (Joshua 18:12) The western boundary ran south along the werstern edge of the hill facing Beth-horon, ending at Kiriath-baal. Beginning at the outskirts of Kiriath-jearim and ending at the southern end of the Jordan River was the southern boundary. The Jordan River made up the eastern boundary. In all, there were fourteen towns with their villages given to the tribe of Benjamin.

Lord, thank you for your Word today! Help us to take action on the blessings you have already given us. Many of us wait on an inheritance you have already provided. Help us to recognize it and take possession of it. We love you!

May the Lord bless you and protect you. May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord show you his favor and give you his peace.” (Numbers 6:24-26)

….AND MAY WE ALL PRACTICE THIS WITH ONE ANOTHER.
