This chapter is a continuation of the previous chapter, as the Lord goes into detail of who will assist Him in the complete destruction of Babylon. This is how the chapter begins: “This is what the Lord says: “I will stir up a destroyer against Babylon and the people of Babylonia. Foreigners will come and winnow her, blowing her away as chaff. They will come from every side to rise against her in her day of trouble.” (Jeremiah 51:1-2) (I love how the Lord says, “I will stir up a destroyer against Babylon…” That statement tells us that God is in control! He is the one pulling all of the strings and orchestrating events. Lord, you are amazing!)
Later in the chapter, Jeremiah indicates how the Lord is continuing to orchestrate events and stir up spirits. “Sharpen the arrows! List up the shields! For the Lord has stirred up the spirit of the kings of the Medes to march against Babylon and destroy her. This is his vengeance against those who desecrated his Temple.” (Jeremiah 51:11) (Wow! What spirits is God stirring up for us? What plans is He implementing for our prosperity or destruction, contingent on how closely we are walking with Him? Yes, Lord!)
