Ecclesiastes 1

In this chapter, Solomon begins to share what he has discovered about his life and the value of it. Here's the chapter in its entirety: “These are the words of the Teacher, King David’s son, who ruled in Jerusalem.

Everything Is Meaningless

“Everything is meaningless,” says the Teacher, “utterly meaningless!”

What do people get for all their hard work? “Generations come and go, but nothing really changes. The sun rises and sets and hurries around to rise again. The wind blows south and north, here and there, twisting back and forth, getting nowhere. The rivers run into the sea, but the sea is never full. Then the water returns again to the rivers and flows again to the sea. Everything is so weary and tiresome! No matter how much we see, we are never satisfied. No matter how much we hear, we are not content. (Wow…this is a recurring theme in the lives of so many!)

HIstory merely repeats itself. It has all been done before. Nothing under the sun is truly new. What can you point to that is new? How do you know it didn’t already exist long ago? We don’t remember what happened in those former times. And in future generations, no one will remember what we are doing now. (Wow...Solomon is speaking the truth.)

The Futility of Wisdom

I, the Teacher, was king of Israel, and I lived in Jerusalem. I devoted myself to search for understanding and to explore by wisdom everything being done in the world. I soon discovered that God has dealt a tragic existence to the human race. Everything under the sun is meaningless, like chasing the wind. What is wrong cannot be righted. What is missing cannot be recovered. (Wow! When you think about that statement, it makes sense. At first, I thought “You can recover something that’s missing.” But then I thought that missing is different from being lost. You can recover something that’s lost, but if it is missing it implies you may not have ever had it…the wisdom of Solomon.)

I said to myself, “Look, I am wiser than any of the kings who ruled in Jerusalem before me. I have greater wisdom and knowledge than any of them.” So I worked hard to distinguish wisdom from foolishness. But now I realize that even this was like chasing the wind. For the greater my wisdom, the greater my grief. To increase knowledge only increases sorrow. (Ecclesiastes 1) (Wow…that is profound.)

Lord, thank you for your Word today! Is Solomon correct??? Is life utterly meaningless!?! Or can we find meaning and/or purpose in everything we do? Yes, Lord, according to Solomon, if we make you a part of everything we do, our lives can have meaning and purpose. Lord, help us seek and embrace you, so we can find our purpose. Lord, we love you!

May the Lord bless you and protect you. May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord show you his favor and give you his peace.” (Numbers 6:24-26)

….AND MAY WE ALL PRACTICE THIS WITH ONE ANOTHER.
