Chapter 22 is a continuation of the previous chapter. Moses continues citing various regulations the people of Israel should follow. He tells the people, if they see anything that belongs to a neighbor, don’t pretend you didn’t see it. He also says, “A woman must not wear men’s clothing, and a man must not wear women’s clothing. The Lord your God detests people who do this.” (Deuteronomy 22:5)
This touches on the controversial subject of homosexuality. What is true? Isn’t God love? Doesn’t He love each and every one of us? Even as a sinner, doesn’t He love me? My answer is absolutely! But as a sinner, can we make it to God’s Kingdom? The bible says, the Lord says, Jesus says...we cannot. One reference is in the new testament, 1 Corinthians 6:9-10. It states, “Don’t you know that those who do wrong will have no share in the Kingdom of God? Don’t fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin, who are idol worshipers, adulterers, male prostitutes, homosexuals, thieves, greedy people, drunkards, abusers, and swindlers -- none of these will have a share in the Kingdom of God.”
The good news is, as sinners, those sins can be washed away, forgiven, and we become new creatures in Christ! As a result, we have to turn away from our sin; we cannot continue to walk in that sin once we are forgiven. That’s my understanding. If the bible supports something different, I would love to hear about it so I can broaden my understanding and be more confident with my limited knowledge. As usual, if anyone has relevant information to share, please place a comment. I would love to hear from you.
Moses continues talking about finding bird’s nests, roof barriers, planting crops between crops, and never plowing with an ox and a donkey harnessed together, or wearing clothing made of wool and linen woven together.
In reference to an ox and donkey, my bible presents a side note titled “Cooperation”, highlighting verse 22. It states, “An ox and a donkey work at different speeds. Harnessed together, they will pull a plow unevenly. When two members of any team pull in opposite directions, they nullify each other’s efforts. The Bible warns believers about forming unhealthy alliances with unbelievers (2 Cor. 6:14-16), especially in areas where their integrity and values might be compromised. Are you working on a team? Are you responsible for supervising others who work together? Utilize this basic principle: Teamwork involves more than the work assigned; it requires certain similarities of purpose and method among the team members.” (Touch Point Bible)
Moses completes the chapter discussing regulations regarding sexual purity, such as, falsely accusing virgin women, adultery, and rape.
Lord, thank you for your Word today! Help us to be in compliance with your Word and your regulations. We love you!
“May the Lord bless you and protect you. May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord show you his favor and give you his peace.” (Numbers 6:24-26)
….AND MAY WE ALL PRACTICE THIS WITH ONE ANOTHER.
