In this chapter, Moses discusses the regulations concerning war. He begins saying, “When you go out to fight your enemies and you face horses and chariots and an army greater than your own, do not be afraid. The Lord your God, who brought you safely out of Egypt, is with you! Before you go into battle, the priest will come forward to speak with the troops. He will say, “Listen to me, all you men of Israel! Do not lose heart or panic. For the Lord your God is going with you! He will fight for you against your enemies, and he will give you victory!” (Deuteronomy 20:1-4)
Yes, Lord! That’s what I’m talking about!
Moses continues, explaining that the officers will address the troops and tell them that if they have unfinished business at home, they need to go home and take care of it because they may die in battle. He then says, “Then the officers will also say, “Is anyone terrified? If you are, go home before you frighten anyone else.” (verse 8) Lol...that is funny!
In my bible, it has a side caption that is titled “Courage”. It breaks down verse 8, and says,
“We never exist alone. Our lives affect the lives of others and vice versa. If we consistently forget to rely on God for help or decide not to include him, how will this affect the way we influence others? How do you feel when fellow Christians demonstrate fear or a lack of faith? We don’t have the luxury of thinking only of ourselves. Our responsibility to build others up should be an incentive to keep our courage in hard times. Are you facing tomorrow with fear or worry? Can it hurt to choose to trust God anyway? You may end up encouraging someone else as well as yourself.” (Touch Point Bible)
Moses completes the chapter explaining that the Israelites “...must completely destroy the Hittites, Amorites Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, just as the Lord our God has commanded you. This will keep the people of the land from teaching you their detestable customs in the worship of their gods, which would cause you to sin deeply against the Lord your God.” (Deuteronomy 20:17-18)
Lord, thank you for your Word today! Help us to not be afraid and to trust you above our fears and worries, for you are with us and will give us victory over our enemies! We love you!
“May the Lord bless you and protect you. May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord show you his favor and give you his peace.” (Numbers 6:24-26)
….AND MAY WE ALL PRACTICE THIS WITH ONE ANOTHER.
Always on time!
