In chapter 13, Moses warns the people of Israel not to be influenced by false prophets, family, friends, or community leaders/members to worship other gods. He begins by saying, “Suppose there are prophets among you, or those who have dreams about the future, and they promise you signs or miracles, and the predicted signs or miracles take place. If the prophets then say, “Come, let us worship the gods of foreign nations,” do not listen to them. The Lord your God is testing you to see if you love him with all your heart and soul. Serve only the Lord your God and fear him alone. Obey his commands, listen to his voice, and cling to him.” (Deuteronomy 13:1-4)
Moses continues, indicating that those false prophets must be put to death for trying to influence you to rebel against the Lord. Moses states, “...you must execute them to remove the evil from among you.” (verse 5)
The rest of the chapter highlights that death is required to those who are trying to lead you astray, even if it is a close friend or family member. Moses also states that if an entire town has been encouraged to worship other gods, the people of Israel must completely destroy the town, keeping absolutely nothing for themselves, burning it to the ground and never rebuilding it.
Moses finishes the chapter telling the people that the Lord will be merciful to them, have compassion for them, and make them a great nation if they follow these commands.
Lord, thank you for your Word today! Help us to always put you first, hear your voice, listen to your instructions, and obey your commands so that we continually receive your mercy and grace. We love you!
“May the Lord bless you and protect you. May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord show you his favor and give you his peace.” (Numbers 6:24-26)
….AND MAY WE ALL PRACTICE THIS WITH ONE ANOTHER.
To God be the glory...He is always right on time!
Very timely word!
