2 Chronicles 16 - Final Years of Asa’s Reign

This chapter recounts the events of 1 Kings 15:17-22. It highlights King Asa’s decision to rely on the help of another king to defend his land from being taken over by King Baasha of Israel. In 1 Kings, it doesn’t mention the Lord’s displeasure in Asa’s decision to seek help from a man instead of his Lord, but this chapter does. Let’s pick it up at that point. King Ben-hadad had just conquered Baasha’s men in various towns for King Asa.

“At that time Hanani the seer came to King Asa and told him, “Because you have put your trust in the king of Aram instead of in the Lord your god, you missed your chance to destroy the army of the king of Aram. Don’t you remember what happened to the Ethiopians and Libyans and their vast army, with all of their chariots and horsemen? At that time you relied on the Lord, and he handed them all over to you. The eyes of the Lord search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him. What a fool you have been! From now on, you will be at war.” Asa became so angry with Hanani for saying this that he threw him into prison. At that time, Asa also began to oppress some of his people.

The chapter ends with Asa dying sooner than expected because he, again, did not seek the Lord’s help, but sought help only from his physicians.

Lord, thank you for your Word today! Help us acknowledge you in all things, seeking you in everything, so you can direct our paths and make them straight. We love you!

May the Lord bless you and protect you. May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord show you his favor and give you his peace.” (Numbers 6:24-26)

….AND MAY WE ALL PRACTICE THIS WITH ONE ANOTHER.
