1 Chronicles 17 - The Lord’s Covenant Promise to David

This chapter recounts the events of 2 Samuel 7, verses 1 through 17…nothing added or deleted, other than a few word changes. Here’s an example using 1 Chronicles 17:10-14:

“...And now I declare that the Lord will build a house for you – a dynasty of kings! For when you die, I will raise up one of your sons, and I will make his kingdom strong. He is the one who will build a house – a temple – for me. And I will establish his throne forever. I will be his father, and he will be my son. I will not take my unfailing love from him as I took it from Saul, who ruled before you. I will establish him over my dynasty and my kingdom for all time, and his throne will be secure forever.”

When I read that text from 2 Samuel 7, I initially thought God was talking about His son Jesus, but I learned later that Solomon built the Temple for the Lord, so the text was referencing Solomon. The Lord clearly says to David in 1 Chronicles, “I will raise up one of your sons,...” However in 2 Samuel 7, the Lord says, “I will raise up one of your descendants,...” Using the word descendants caused me to think that maybe the Lord was talking about Jesus, because Jesus is one of David’s descendants.

Other than small changes like that, this chapter is completely the same. As usual, read it for yourself, see how it aligns with our lesson in 2 Samuel, draw some conclusions, make some connections, and strive to deepen your knowledge.

Lord, thank you for your Word today! Thank you for promising to be with us for “all time”! We love you!

May the Lord bless you and protect you. May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord show you his favor and give you his peace.” (Numbers 6:24-26)

….AND MAY WE ALL PRACTICE THIS WITH ONE ANOTHER.
